The clinical-knowledge benchmark that decides where IMGs match
Conducted by NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) and FSMB through the USMLE programme, with ECFMG certifying international medical graduates via the Pathways framework.
- Conducting bodies: NBME + FSMB (USMLE programme). ECFMG certifies international medical graduates via the six-route Pathways framework.
- Eligibility: Graduated from (or final-year at) a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a USMLE-eligible "Sponsor Note", and currently in the ECFMG certification cycle.
- Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) at Prometric — single-day administration.
- Structure: 8 blocks of up to 40 MCQs each, 60 minutes per block, ~318 questions total.
- Day length: 9 hours including 45 minutes of optional break time + 15 minutes of optional tutorial.
- Scoring: Three-digit scaled score reported. Current minimum passing standard is 214. National medians cluster around 245-247.
- Cycle: Year-round on-demand testing within your three-month ECFMG eligibility window.
- Language: English only.
