The NAT-TEST exam format tests Japanese across five levels, 5Q to 1Q, using multiple-choice questions only — there is no speaking or writing. Knowing the structure helps you prepare efficiently.
The three sections
- 文字・語彙 – script and vocabulary.
- 文法・読解 – grammar and reading.
- 聴解 – listening.
Levels and scoring
The five levels mirror the JLPT scale (5Q is the most basic, 1Q the most advanced). To pass you generally need a total score above the cutoff and a minimum in each section, so a single weak section can hold you back.
Because NAT-TEST is held frequently, it is a great way to test your Japanese more often than once or twice a year. See the format in action with our NAT-TEST mock tests, or browse plans.
