CELI Exam Format Explained: Levels, Sections and Sample Questions

The CELI exam format is set by the University for Foreigners of Perugia and runs across six levels, from CELI Impatto (A1) to CELI 5 (C2). Knowing the structure is the first step to a confident pass.

CELI levels at a glance

  • CELI Impatto – A1 · CELI 1 – A2 · CELI 2 – B1
  • CELI 3 – B2 · CELI 4 – C1 · CELI 5 – C2

The parts of a CELI exam

Each level tests reading (comprensione della lettura), listening (comprensione dell’ascolto), writing (produzione scritta) and speaking (produzione orale). From CELI 3 (B2) upward there is also a language-competence component covering grammar and usage.

How CELI is scored

Skills are assessed across the paper and you need an overall pass, so no single weak section should drag you under. Practising each part in the real format under timed conditions is the surest way to get there.
