What DELF A1 tests
DELF A1 certifies you can communicate in simple, immediate everyday situations — introduce yourself, ask for basic information, handle a short exchange in a shop or café. It is the entry-level diploma from France Éducation international and is valid for life once earned.
The syllabus has not changed for 2026 — the same four-section paper France Éducation international has run since 2020 remains in use. There is one paper session for the three written sections plus a separate live oral, both usually on the same day at an accredited centre.
The four sections at a glance
| Section | French name | Duration | Marks | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | Compréhension de l’oral | ~20 min | /25 | 4 short recordings (phone, announcement, dialogue). MCQ + pick-a-picture + number/time short-answer. |
| Reading | Compréhension des écrits | 30 min | /25 | 4 short texts (form, notice, email, blog). MCQ + true/false + short-answer. |
| Writing | Production écrite | 30 min | /25 | Two short texts (~40–60 words each) — a form and a short message/postcard. |
| Speaking | Production orale | 5–7 min + 10 min prep | /25 | Three tasks — guided interview, question formation from cards, dialogue simulation. |

Section-by-section: what actually appears
Listening (Compréhension de l’oral) plays each recording twice with a 30-second gap. Recordings are 20–30 seconds each on everyday topics. Number, time and date drills are the highest-return prep target — they recur in every recording.
Reading (Compréhension des écrits) mixes practical texts (an ad, a form, a schedule) with short personal texts (a friend’s email, a blog entry). Questions test literal comprehension, not inference.
Writing (Production écrite) sets two short tasks. Task 1 is typically completing a form or filling in basic personal information. Task 2 is a short message (postcard, invitation, thank-you). Word count is 40–60 words per task; under-length is penalised.
Speaking (Production orale) is scored on three tasks. Guided conversation about you (~1 min), question formation from 5 keyword cards drawn on the spot (~2 min), and a short dialogue simulation with 10 minutes of preparation time (~2 min).
What CEFR A1 competencies each section tests
- Present tense — required in all four sections; passé composé optional at A1 (introduced at A2).
- The 8 personal-question topics: nom, âge, nationalité, famille, profession/études, ville, loisirs, langues. Rehearsed answers to each go a long way.
- Numbers, times, dates, prices — recur across all four sections; drill until automatic.
- The 4 question openers — Qu’est-ce que, Est-ce que, Quel/Quelle, Combien de — essential for Speaking Task 2.
- Basic vocabulary of ~1000 most-frequent French words; specialist vocabulary is not required and often flagged as inappropriate.

How much can you skip? Almost nothing
The elimination scoring — 5/25 minimum per section — means you cannot afford to leave any section untrained. Most Indian candidates who miss the pass do so on Speaking or Listening because they prepared reading and writing at home but never rehearsed the audio-based sections under time pressure.
The single highest-return study block is 10 minutes daily on TV5Monde ‘Apprendre le français’ A1 — it maps directly to the recording types the exam uses and hits both Listening and Speaking preparation in one session.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is DELF A1 in total?
1 hour 20 minutes for the written paper: 20 minutes Listening, 30 minutes Reading, 30 minutes Writing. Plus a separate 5–7 minute Production orale with 10 minutes of preparation. Most centres schedule Speaking the same day, earlier or later than the written paper.
What is the DELF A1 pass mark?
50 out of 100 total AND at least 5 out of 25 on every individual section. Both conditions must be met simultaneously; a strong total does not compensate for a below-5 section score.
Has the DELF A1 syllabus changed for 2026?
No — the format last changed in 2020 to the current 4-section structure. The 2026 sessions use the same syllabus, task types, and marking grid.
How many hours of prep should I plan for DELF A1?
For an absolute beginner, 120–160 hours over 4–6 months of study is typical. Candidates with 6–12 months of prior French exposure often clear A1 in 40–60 focused hours, provided all four sections are trained rather than only reading.
