What DELF B2 reading tests
The B2 reading section certifies you can read a substantial article, identify its argument, distinguish opinion from fact, and answer detailed questions about position and nuance. The texts are authentic press articles adapted only lightly — the level jump from B1 is bigger than A2 to B1.
Topics span CEFR B2 domains: contemporary society, economy, technology, education, culture. Vocabulary spans the ~5000 most-frequent French words plus topic-specific terms readers should infer from context.
Format & the two exercises

How the 25 marks split
Marks split roughly 12/13 across the two exercises with a mix of multiple-choice (usually 4 options), true/false-with-justification (2 marks each), short-answer, and one or two ‘What does the author think about X?’ interpretive questions.
The interpretive questions are where B2 candidates most often lose marks. The answer is rarely stated literally — you infer the author’s position from tone, hedging, and rhetorical choices. This is a specific skill that reading practice at B1 does not train.
The 60-minute strategy
The single biggest tactical decision is text order. If you are stronger on argumentative texts, do Exercise 2 first while you are fresh; if informational, do Exercise 1 first. Both are worth similar marks and there is no penalty for order.
For each text, the method is: 2 minutes reading questions, 8 minutes reading the text with a highlighter marking every answer as you find it, 12 minutes writing answers with quoted justifications, 3 minutes checking. That gives you 25 minutes per exercise plus 10 minutes buffer.
For interpretive questions, look for hedges — ‘peut-être’, ‘sans doute’, ‘il semblerait que’. The author’s position is usually indicated by which side of the argument they hedge on. If the article hedges pro-arguments and states con-arguments flatly, the author is on the con side.

Common mistakes that cap you at 15/25
- Reading both texts fully before answering any question. Costs 15+ minutes and leaves you rushed.
- Missing the author’s position on interpretive questions. Look for hedges and rhetorical questions, not literal statements.
- Paraphrasing quoted justifications. Verbatim only.
- Guessing multiple-choice without eliminating. B2 MCQs have 4 options; usually 2 can be eliminated on first read.
- Running past the 60-minute limit into your writing time. The writing paper follows immediately — every minute you steal from writing costs more marks than it gains here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is DELF B2 reading?
60 minutes for two texts (~750 words each) and roughly 22 questions in total. Most candidates who pass first-time finish with 3–5 minutes to review; those who run out of time typically over-read the first text.
What is the difference between DELF B1 and B2 reading?
Text length roughly doubles, vocabulary spans ~5000 words vs ~3000, and interpretive questions — ‘what does the author think about X?’ — appear at B2 for the first time. The B2 paper is a full step up in every dimension.
Are DELF B2 reading texts authentic?
Yes — the source articles are real press pieces (Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro, La Croix, magazines like Marianne), adapted only for length. Reading these publications regularly is the best long-term prep.
What’s the pass mark for DELF B2 reading?
You need 5/25 on Compréhension Écrite to clear the section minimum, and 50/100 across all four sections to earn the diploma. A competitive target for university applications is 18+/25 in the reading paper specifically.
