What TCF Canada Expression Orale tests
The productive TCF Canada sections — Expression Orale and Expression Écrite — are the ones IRCC counts for federal Express Entry additional French points. Candidates who take only the receptive sections are eligible for the certificate but not for the CLB-based CRS boost.
The oral is a 15-minute in-person session with a certified examiner. Unlike DELF, there is no preparation time; every task starts spontaneously. Recordings are made and second-marked, and results are reported on the 20-point TCF scale plus the corresponding CLB level.
Format & the three tasks
| Task | What you do | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Question exchange | You ask the examiner questions to complete a form or gather information. | ~2 min |
| 2 · Information task | You give the examiner information — describe, explain or narrate. | ~5 min |
| 3 · Opinion argument | You express and defend an opinion on a topic the examiner sets. | ~10 min |

Strategy for a CLB 7+ score
For CLB 7 (10–11 points) the examiner needs to hear structured, tense-varied French across all three tasks. In Task 3 the discriminator is your ability to defend a position with two arguments and a nuanced closing — not simply to state an opinion.
The single highest-return preparation move is a bank of 12 prepared opinion arguments across common exam topics — technology, environment, work, education, family, urban vs rural life. Each argument follows the same 4-line skeleton: position, first reason with an example, second reason with an example, nuanced closing. Practised until automatic, you never freeze on a Task 3 prompt.
Task 1 is often under-prepared because it looks easy. It is not — forming five different question shapes in two minutes is a specific skill. Practise ‘Est-ce que…’, ‘Quel/Quelle…’, ‘Combien de…’, ‘Depuis quand…’, ‘Pourriez-vous me dire… ?’ until each is automatic.

Common mistakes that keep candidates at CLB 6
- Skipping Task 1 preparation. Weak question formation caps the whole oral even if Tasks 2–3 are strong.
- One-tense speaking. Present-only responses signal sub-B1 and cap the score at TCF 9.
- Reading tone. Speaking too flatly costs prosody marks and signals a mid-CLB ceiling.
- No connectors in Task 3. Arguments listed without ‘D’abord’, ‘Ensuite’, ‘En revanche’, ‘En conclusion’ read as CLB 6 regardless of vocabulary.
- Neutral opinion — ‘les deux ont des avantages’. Task 3 rewards a defended position, not a balanced summary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is TCF Canada speaking scored?
On a 20-point scale that maps to CLB 4 through CLB 10+. IRCC uses the CLB level, not the raw score, to award Express Entry additional points — the same CRS boost applies across 10–11 (CLB 7), 12–13 (CLB 8), 14–15 (CLB 9) and 16–20 (CLB 10).
Is TCF Canada speaking harder than DELF B2?
Different, not harder. TCF has no preparation time and no source document, so the challenge is spontaneity rather than argument density. Candidates who cleared DELF B2 typically hit CLB 7–8 on TCF Canada without much additional prep.
Can I take TCF Canada speaking online?
No. Expression Orale is always in-person at an accredited centre, one-on-one with a certified examiner. The listening and reading sections are computer-based at the same session.
How many attempts do I get at TCF Canada speaking?
You can retake the full test as many times as you like — there is no lifetime cap — but a minimum 30-day gap between sittings is enforced by France Éducation international. Results are valid for 2 years for immigration purposes.
