The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is the world’s most widely used English proficiency test for the workplace. Over 14,000 companies in 160+ countries rely on it — and in Japan and South Korea it is virtually mandatory for corporate hiring and promotion.
What Does TOEIC Test?
Unlike IELTS or TOEFL, which test academic English, TOEIC measures workplace English: emails, phone calls, meetings, announcements, and business reports. It is a more practical, career-focused assessment.
The Two TOEIC Tests
- TOEIC Listening & Reading (L&R) — 200 questions, 2 hours, scored 10–990. This is the standard test employers require.
- TOEIC Speaking & Writing (S&W) — production skills; Speaking scored 0–200, Writing 0–200.
TOEIC L&R Format
| Section | Parts | Questions | Time | Score range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 1–4 | 100 | ~45 min | 5–495 |
| Reading | 5–7 | 100 | 75 min | 5–495 |
| Total | — | 200 | ~120 min | 10–990 |
TOEIC Score Validity
Scores are valid for two years from the test date. Most employers require a score issued within the past two years.
Who Accepts TOEIC?
Japan alone sees 2.7 million TOEIC tests taken annually, making it the world’s single largest TOEIC market. South Korea follows with over 2 million per year. Companies that set minimum TOEIC score thresholds include Sony, Toyota, Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and virtually every major chaebol and keiretsu group.
TOEIC vs IELTS vs TOEFL
If your goal is a corporate job in Japan or Korea, take the TOEIC. For university admissions, IELTS or TOEFL is the right choice. The three tests measure different things and are not interchangeable.
How to Register
In Japan, registration goes through IIBC (iibc-global.org). In Korea, through YBM or Hackers. In other countries, register at etsglobal.org.
