The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, 汉语水平考试) is the most widely recognised Chinese language certification worldwide, but it is not the only option. Other notable Chinese language tests include the YCT (Youth Chinese Test, 中小学生汉语考试), the TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language, used in Taiwan for Traditional Chinese), the MHK (Minzu Hanyu Kaoshi, for Chinese ethnic minority candidates), and the BCT (Business Chinese Test, 商务汉语考试). HSK: The Standard International Certification
HSK is developed and administered by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) under China’s Ministry of Education. It uses Simplified Chinese and tests Mandarin as spoken in mainland China. HSK is the primary certification required for Chinese university admissions, Chinese government scholarships, and professional employment at Chinese companies. HSK is administered in over 60 countries at more than 1,000 test centres. If your goals involve mainland China, HSK is the correct choice.
YCT: Chinese for Young Learners
The YCT (Youth Chinese Test) is designed for primary and secondary school students learning Mandarin as a foreign language. It uses Simplified Chinese and covers four levels (YCT 1–4), corresponding approximately to HSK 1–3 level language ability. YCT questions use simpler vocabulary, shorter texts, and more visual content than HSK. YCT is appropriate for students between approximately ages 8 and 15 who are learning Mandarin in a school environment. It is not a substitute for HSK for adult learners or for academic/professional admissions purposes.
TOCFL: Traditional Chinese in Taiwan
The TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language, 華語文能力測驗) is developed by the Language Training and Testing Centre (LTTC) in Taiwan. It uses Traditional Chinese characters and tests Mandarin as used in Taiwan. TOCFL is the required certification for university admissions in Taiwan and for some Taiwan government scholarship programmes. It has six levels (A1–C2). If your goals involve Taiwan — study, work, or residence — TOCFL is the appropriate choice. TOCFL and HSK are not interchangeable for institutional admissions purposes.
BCT: Chinese for Business Purposes
The BCT (Business Chinese Test, 商务汉语考试) is designed for professionals who use Mandarin in business contexts. It tests business vocabulary, formal communication, and professional scenarios including meetings, correspondence, and negotiations. BCT is available in two forms: BCT (A) for basic professional communication and BCT (B) for fluent professional communication. If your goal is demonstrating Chinese language ability specifically in a business context rather than academic admissions, BCT may be more relevant than HSK 5 or 6.
