The TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is one of the two major German language proficiency exams accepted for university admission in Germany. Unlike the Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF is specifically designed for academic and university contexts. If you are applying to a German-taught university programme, this guide covers everything about the TestDaF exam pattern for 2026.
TestDaF vs Goethe – Which Should You Take?
| Feature | TestDaF | Goethe-Zertifikat |
| Purpose | Specifically for university admission | General language proficiency |
| Levels tested | B2 upper to C1 range (TDN 3-5) | A1 through C2 (separate exams per level) |
| Accepted for university | Yes — required/preferred by most German universities | Some universities accept C1/C2 |
| Academic language focus | Yes — academic texts, lectures, scientific writing | No — more general/everyday language |
| Pass/fail | No pass/fail — you get a TDN score per component | Yes — 60/100 per module to pass |
| Validity | No expiry | No expiry |
Most German universities specifically list TestDaF TDN 4 as a requirement. If you plan to study at a German university in a German-taught programme, TestDaF is generally the preferred exam over Goethe.
TestDaF Score Scale – TDN Levels Explained
| TDN Score | CEFR Equivalent | University Admission Accepted? |
| TDN 3 | Lower B2 | Usually not sufficient for university admission |
| TDN 4 | Upper B2 / Lower C1 | Accepted by most universities |
| TDN 5 | C1+ | Accepted by all universities — strong profile |
You receive a TDN score (3, 4, or 5) for each of the four components independently. Most universities require TDN 4 in all four components. Some programmes allow TDN 3 in one component — check with your specific university.
TestDaF Exam Structure 2026
| Component | Skills Tested | Duration | Questions/Tasks |
| Leseverstehen (Reading) | Academic text comprehension | 60 minutes | 3 texts, ~30 questions |
| Horerverstehen (Listening) | Lecture and interview comprehension | 40 minutes | 3 recordings, ~25 questions |
| Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Writing) | Academic essay based on a graphic/chart | 60 minutes | 1 essay (~250 words) |
| Mundlicher Ausdruck (Speaking) | Academic monologue and response tasks | 35 minutes | 8 tasks |
Total time: approximately 3 hours 15 minutes. The speaking component is recorded and sent to TestDaF Institute evaluators — it is NOT conducted live with an examiner.
Component 1: Leseverstehen (Reading) – 60 Minutes
Reading texts at TestDaF come from academic journals, university websites, and scientific magazines — materials that mirror what you will read during your studies.
| Text | Type | Task Format | Marks |
| Text 1 | Short informational text (notices, announcements) | Multiple choice / matching | TDN scored |
| Text 2 | Long analytical text (science/social issue) | True/False/Not mentioned | TDN scored |
| Text 3 | Argumentative academic article | Select correct answer from 4 options | TDN scored |
The “Not mentioned” option in Text 2 is the most common source of errors. Train yourself to distinguish between information implied by the text and information genuinely absent from it.
Component 2: Horerverstehen (Listening) – 40 Minutes
Listening tasks simulate the kinds of audio you encounter at a German university — student radio broadcasts, professors’ office hour conversations, and academic lectures.
| Recording | Type | Task |
| Recording 1 | Conversation at university (student + advisor) | True/False/Not mentioned |
| Recording 2 | Presentation or lecture with visual aids | Fill gaps or select answers |
| Recording 3 | Academic discussion or interview on a topic | Multiple choice / matching |
Recordings are played once only (unlike Goethe, where most are played twice). Speed is natural academic German. Train with recorded German university lectures on YouTube or OpenCast platforms.
Component 3: Schriftlicher Ausdruck (Writing) – 60 Minutes
This is the most challenging component for most candidates. You are given a chart, graph, or statistical data related to an academic topic and must:
Step 1 – Describe the data (approx. 100 words): Summarise what the chart shows without interpretation.
Step 2 – Compare and comment (approx. 150 words): Analyse trends, draw comparisons, and offer a brief opinion or implication.
Your essay is evaluated on: content accuracy, logical structure, vocabulary range, grammatical complexity, and register (formal academic German).
Common chart types: bar charts, line graphs, pie charts on topics like environmental data, migration statistics, employment trends, or energy consumption.
Component 4: Mundlicher Ausdruck (Speaking) – 35 Minutes
Unlike most exams, TestDaF speaking is recorded on a computer — you hear prompts and record your response. There is no live examiner.
| Task Type | Number of Tasks | What Is Required |
| Describe a visual (image or diagram) | 2 tasks | Describe what you see in 60–90 seconds |
| React to a statement or claim | 2 tasks | Agree/disagree and argue your position |
| Express your opinion | 2 tasks | Give structured opinion with reasons (90 sec) |
| Hypothetical scenario | 2 tasks | Describe what you would do in a situation |
Preparation time: 20 seconds per task. Speaking time: 60–90 seconds. Practise speaking directly into a microphone to simulate real exam conditions.

TestDaF Fees India 2026
The TestDaF exam fee is approximately EUR 175–195 (approximately INR 15,700–17,500) per sitting, billed in Euros. Fees are set by the TestDaF Institute and may vary slightly based on the administering centre.
TestDaF Preparation Timeline
| Starting Level | Time to TDN 4 | Study Hours per Week |
| Goethe B1 certified | 5–7 months | 15–20 hours/week |
| B2 general (Goethe B2) | 2–4 months (academic register focus) | 12–15 hours/week |
| B2 but no academic German | 3–5 months | 12–15 hours/week |
The biggest gap between B2 general and TestDaF TDN 4 is academic register and academic listening. Candidates with strong everyday B2 often underestimate the difficulty shift.
